UNSCRIPTED
Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Entrepreneurship
Author: MJ DeMarco
This book felt so similar to The 4-Hour Work Week that I experienced deja-vu several times while reading it. In the end, I didn’t finish it. The tone of UNSCRIPTED is lighter than Tim Ferriss’s book (or maybe I’ve just grown used to the occasional swearing), but it was probably just bad timing to start this one so soon after finishing the other - the ideas and examples overlap quite a bit.
That said, I got the impression that DeMarco’s book is better structured and might be easier to follow overall.
Why read it? At some point in life, many of us realize that things aren’t going as smoothly as we hoped. You’re working hard, but still can’t afford a new car or a house that fits your family’s needs. Not talking about luxury - just something decent and new. You work 9-to-5, earn promotions and bonuses, and try to manage your career wisely, yet your financial situation barely improves. You start saving on holidays, but the “magic” of compound interest doesn’t seem to work for you. It’s a classic mid-life crisis scenario.
You can either accept it and keep “following the script” until the end - or, as DeMarco suggests, break free from it. His answer is straightforward: pursue entrepreneurship. Start your own business, because only by creating something that scales - where others’ work multiplies your impact - can you move beyond the limits of trading time for money.
UNSCRIPTED can serve as a motivational push to take that leap. If you’ve already started wondering whether entrepreneurship might be worth a try, this book could give you both inspiration and some practical advice to get started.
